COMMUNION AND CHRISTENING FAVOURS: TRADITIONS AND SUGGESTIONS

Traditionally, parents give their guests a small present to thank them for their presence at the communion or baptism of their child.
Favors are undoubtedly the most common gift and most appreciated by the guests. According to tradition, christening favours or communion favours may be offered by the godfather or godmother of the baby.

There are so many different fillings that it is fairly easy satisfy everyone’s tastes: chocolates, sugared almonds, chocolate olives, etc., giving you more choice. There are all kinds of packaging: small cardboard boxes, tulle, organza, glass, plastic, etc. The baby's name and the date of the event may be included on a small, personalised favour label.

Traditional fillings are delicately coated with a thin layer of sugar, which is carefully smoothed. The quality of coated depends on the choice of the almonds and the fine layer of sugar over it. Typically, it takes ten days to make a sugared almond. There are a wide variety of all colours and qualities for every taste and every budget (allow 15 to 30 euros per kilo of sweets to fill your favours). Do not venture below these prices... or your guests might break your teeth on your favours as the layer of sugar is so thick! Not all favours are filled with almonds. Besides the classic sugared almonds, you can fill your favours the special coated roasted almonds, chocolate or fruit dragees or chocolate olives.

Usually, between 5 and 9 sugar almonds are included in each composition.
Tradionally, 5 sugared almonds are included for health, prosperity, longevity, fertility and happiness. The sugared almonds have a long sell by date as the sugar coating effectively protects its almond or chocolate centre. Today, the traditional christening favour is made with an almond. There are also many kinds of almonds:
* The Avola, elongated and flat, which grow on the sunny hillsides of Sicily, are very fruity and keep well. These are the rarest and most requested filling for wedding favours. The Imperial Avola, is the finest filling for your favours. The little Avola called “Avolina” is less sugar coated.
* The Planetas, produced in Spain, near Alicante, fatter than the previous, shorter form can be kept lower. These almonds have exquisite taste and offer a good value for money, making the ideal for filling your favours.
* The Longuet, originating in Catalonia, is elegant and keeps well, making them a good wedding favour filler. Their flavour is less intense.

Order your favours 1 to 2 months before the event, especially if your christening will be celebrated in spring or summer. Depending on the quality of the sugared almond, the christening favours can be purchased in advance of your event. Very often, the favours can be stored over 6 months or 1 year for the highest quality before your christening. However, you should keep the favours away from light and moisture, and above all not to keep in the refrigerator or freezer! Generally, you should order them to 3 to 4 weeks before the christening or communion.
